We must have known rendang, a typical West Sumatran food that is famous worldwide. However, if you have ever heard the name bareh randang, is this food the same as randang/rendang in general? We know that rendang comes from beef that has been processed with other special spices such as coconut milk, turmeric, shallots, garlic, and many other spices. In addition to beef, rendang can also be processed from chicken, shellfish, liver, and even eggs. However, it is different with rendang rice, don't think that rice is processed into rendang. That is a wrong perception, it turns out that this rendang rice is a sweet snack without the frills of the typical rendang spices that we know.

Incidentally, I got this rendang rice snack from my old sister who came from West Sumatra, precisely Payakumbuh City. Payakumbuh City is the center of making souvenirs called bareh randang. What is the history of bareh randang? Initially, bareh randang was a kind of dish when people got married. This snack comes from the Payakumbuh area (50 Kota Regency) and Bukittinggi (Agam Regency). Because this area produces a lot of sticky rice, of course it is possible to process food from this ingredient, thus creating rendang rice. Rendang rice or its original name is called bareh randang, etymologically means bareh = rice and randang = rendang (or what is said to be roasting). It can be said that, before making this snack, the rice is first roasted so that it is cooked before being mixed with liquid sugar.

Usually bareh randang lasts 2 weeks, because of its soft texture. If you like sweet and sticky food, you will definitely like this food. Don't be fooled by its simple shape, if you try it you will definitely be addicted. As mentioned earlier, the ingredients of rendang rice are made from natural ingredients from glutinous rice that has been blended/crushed, but still leaves grains in the ingredients, coconut milk from old coconuts, and granulated sugar that has been processed into a liquid, quite simple, but makes you addicted if you like sweet snacks.
