Brem. Unique food made from fermented glutinous rice (tape)

Let's review, what other strange foods will we try? I will probably often explain unique foods from various regions in Indonesia. Maybe not all Indonesians have tried "brem". But some Javanese people must have heard of and tried this snack.

In the Madiun area, brem is widely sold in markets and supermarkets or in shops that sell souvenirs typical of the Madiun area. Its shape is square and white like chalk. There are a few small cavities inside. Likewise in the Wonogiri area, the difference is that this brem is round. The visible difference is that brem comes from Bali, brem from Bali is liquid and can be said to be a type of intoxicating palm wine.

Okay. I will review about Javanese brem, especially brem from Wonogiri area. If you see it directly, you might not think that this food comes from fermented sticky rice tape. Sticky rice is a common food ingredient found throughout Indonesia. Not a few who process sticky rice into tape (i.e. mixing sticky rice with yeast to become a unique food). When sticky rice has become tape, the water starch is squeezed and precipitated into a food called brem.

How does it taste? It is really difficult to explain in words. You will definitely not find a taste similar to brem. If you are curious about the real taste, it would be better if you order it on e-commerce or when you visit Java, Indonesia.

A few days ago, I ordered brem from Wonogiri. As I have written, it is round and white in color. It is light in weight, similar to pumice. When you put the brem in to chew it, don't expect to be able to chew it perfectly like crackers. This food will melt on your tongue, like disappearing, but leaving a strong taste like sweet, sour, and a strong fermented taste that can make your head a little dizzy. For some people, the taste of this brem can be said to be refreshing, especially when enjoying it on a long journey. However, there are probably some who don't like it because the taste is very strange. What about me? I myself have tasted this food when I was a teenager, and honestly I couldn't like it because of its strange taste. However, sometimes our tongues can change to enjoy a different taste. Now I'm starting to like it, and am addicted to its unique taste. My husband and I really like it, there is no taboo that children cannot eat brem, so I also give this snack to our two children. And you need to know, fermented food is very good for your digestion, so this food can be said to bring benefits to your body.
