Burayot. What is this food?

Burayot. What is this food?
There are many authentic Indonesian snacks that we should try. In general, these snacks are made from rice flour, glutinous rice flour, cassava, sweet potatoes, bananas, with a sweet combination of palm sugar or granulated sugar from sugar cane plants. In addition to sweet snacks, savory snacks are also available.

Well, this time I will introduce you to a snack with a unique shape and name. This snack comes from the Garut area, West Java (the most densely populated province in Indonesia). The snack is called "burayot". What does burayot mean? burayot means "ngaburayot" or can be said to be hanging. So, when it is cooked because it is fried, this snack must be hung first before being eaten. Its strange shape will make some people reluctant to eat it. On the other hand, another name for burayot itself is "kont*l kejepit". A term that is not common and is associated with male genitalia. Ethically, it is indeed not appropriate. However, this food has quite a lot of interest among the local people because of its savory, sweet and sticky taste.

What about the ingredients for making burayot itself? The ingredients are indeed familiar to Indonesian people. Burayot is made from rice flour and brown sugar. The ingredients are quite simple and easy to find. The processing method is also not difficult. However, when frying burayot, you must prepare a sharpened bamboo to lift the cooked burayot from the frying pan. By lifting the cake, the burayot will be pointed at the end.

I bought this cake specifically to tell you about. I ordered it directly from its place of origin, Garut. The packaging is quite good, suitable as a souvenir. This burayot can last for two weeks for consumption (because this snack is a wet snack). The contents of one package are ten cakes. Each is wrapped in clear plastic to maintain the hygiene of the cake.

How about the taste of burayot? Burayot has a sweet and sticky taste. The outside of the burayot is like a layer of skin that wraps the inside of the cake. The outer skin feels tough but can be chewed. While the inside of the burayot itself feels sticky and sweet. For those of you who have tried ali cake or ring cake, you might feel the same taste from this cake called burayot. Likewise with the taste of cucur cake, it is similar to the taste of burayot cake.

In my opinion, if you like processed foods made from rice flour and have a sweet taste, you can enjoy this burayot cake. However, if you don't like oily foods, avoid it. Because this cake is processed by frying. When you also don't like the shape, don't force yourself to taste it, even though some people dare to eat it. Possibly, because of the uniqueness of the name and shape, burayot has its own fans. I personally don't really like this food because of its shape and taste (because I prefer cakes made from glutinous rice flour). However, my husband and children really like this cake. They think this cake has a delicious and traditional taste. It is perfect to be used as a tea drinking companion.
